Joan Sutherland - Racewalking
Joan first became interested in racewalking in the late 80s. She had taken up walking to
work in a successful attempt to keep her weight at a manageable level when she heard
that Jaan Roos was teaching racewalking at the Central Y in Toronto.
You would never guess it from her unassuming demeanour, but Joan was a fierce and talented basketball
player in her younger days, and she found it rather easy to pick up the heel and toe style.
She joined the group on weekly 10K outings even though the distance was somewhat daunting at first. Joan
entered her first race in 1988 and went on to compete in two World Athletic Veterans Association
Championships, improving from a 9th and 11th place age group finish in Finland in 1991 to a pair of fourth
places in Japan two years later.
From the very beginning, Joan took an interest in the technical aspects of racewalking and this led to her
decision to become a judge. Joan is also our Assistant Coach. She teaches racewalking when we meet in
Toronto. Paying attention to Joan's advice can lead to considerable improvement. In addition, she really is "the
glue that holds the club together". She supports the club in a myriad of ways, spreading the gospel of
racewalking and fitness and bringing more potential participants into the Ontario Racewalkers' fold.
